Onyx Storm Rating : ⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5/5 stars)
Onyx Storm. Lets get into it.
Alright, book nerds, buckle up, because we need to talk about The Onyx Storm. You know that feeling when you’re watching a movie trailer, and it’s full of epic battle scenes, mysterious figures, and breathtaking landscapes, and you’re like, “YES, I need this in my life!” but then you actually watch the movie, and you’re left saying, “Wait… what just happened?” Yeah, that was my exact experience reading this book.
Confusing But With Potential – Like a Dragon With Amnesia
First off, let’s address the obvious—I was confused. Not the kind of confused where you’re just missing a few details here and there, but the kind of confused where you have to flip back multiple times wondering, Did I miss the two other books?
The plot had more jumps than a caffeinated kangaroo, bouncing between scenes with little explanation, and while I love a fast-paced fantasy, I also like to know what in the name of dragon fire is actually going on.
Characters would suddenly pop up in new places without much transition, major events happened with zero buildup, and at times, I felt like I was missing a secret decoder ring to figure out what was really happening.
You know when you read something and feel like the author had a whole fantasy encyclopedia in their head but forgot to let the rest of us see it? Yeah, that.
And speaking of missing details…
Where in the Name of Fire Did Andarna Come From?
If there’s one thing I wanted—no, needed—to know more about, it was Andarna. This dragon was one of the most fascinating elements of the story line, but somehow, we barely got any backstory. I mean, come on!
If you’re going to make me fall in love with a fictional dragon, at least give us a good lore dump. You can’t just drop a magical, mysterious dragon into the plot and then not tell us everything about where they came from, their history, or if they secretly hoard teacups and treasure. I just wanted MORE.
Listen, I live for dragon lore. It’s basically why I get out of bed in the morning (well, that and coffee). So when I got to the last page without a solid explanation, I almost threw my book across the room. Almost. Because, let’s be honest, I paid good money for my three different versions of this book and I need it to complete my collection.
And let’s not forget… I SELL DRAGON STICKERS! If this book isn’t going to give me enough dragons, I will personally make up for it with my epic collection of dragon-themed stickers and my equally awesome dragon tumbler (because obviously, every fantasy lover needs a coffee cup that screams ‘I believe in dragons’ while running on caffeine’).

A Story That Jumped Around More Than a Nervous Squirrel
The pacing of this book was, for lack of a better word, chaotic. One minute, we’re deep in an intense battle, and the next, we’re in a random new location with no explanation as to how we got there. I actually stopped reading at one point and asked myself, “Did I just time-travel?” because it felt like we were skipping crucial moments.
Important events needed more buildup, emotional moments felt rushed, and I was left craving more depth in places that were glossed over. There were some really cool ideas introduced, but just as I started getting excited about them, the story yanked me in a completely different direction.
It’s like the author was holding a bag of fantasy tropes and throwing them at the story like confetti, hoping some of them would stick. Some did. Some… not so much.
Was Onyx Storm Boring? A Little. But I’m Still Hooked for the rest of the series!
Okay, okay. Let’s be real. Onyx Storm had some slow moments. There were sections where I had to fight the urge to skim, which is never a good sign. I don’t mind a little downtime in a story, but when I find myself checking my phone instead of reading, we have a problem.
That being said, do I still want the next book? Absolutely.
Because despite all my frustrations, there’s potential here. The world itsel is big and magical, even if it wasn’t fleshed out enough. The characters have room to grow, even if I didn’t connect with them as much as I wanted to. And Andarna still has so many questions to answer, and let’s be honest—I’ll take any excuse to keep hoping for more epic dragon content.
Final Thoughts on Onyx Storm – Would I Recommend It?
If you loved the other two books then absolutly. Honestly even though my review isn’t the best one for Onyx Storm I absolutly would recommend it. I just feel this book had a lot of “filler” type chapters that were not necessary. I wanted more about the dragons and Andarna’s history (though, fun fact—I also sell a dragon-themed tumbler for those who do enjoy tea, just saying).
So, here’s my final verdict:
- World-Building: ⭐⭐⭐ (Cool concept, but not enough depth in the places I wanted)
- Plot Pacing: ⭐⭐ (Felt like I was sprinting when I wanted to jog)
- Character Development: ⭐⭐⭐ (Interesting but needed more layers)
- Dragons: ⭐⭐ (WHERE IS ANDARNA’S BACKSTORY?!)
- Overall Enjoyment: ⭐⭐⭐½ (Frustrating but still fun)
Would I re-read this book? Probably not. Would I buy the next one? Absolutely. And if This book won’t deliver on the dragon content I crave, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered with my dragon-themed stickers and tumbler, perfect for anyone who wants to bring a little extra magic into their life.
📖 Final Thought: This book could have been legendary, but instead, it was like a half-cast spell—good, but missing something powerful. Let’s hope book four finally gives us the epic fantasy adventure we deserve.
